JACKSON - The probe of a May car crash in Jackson that left a Toms River woman dead results in death-by-auto charges against a man from whiting. Jackson Police today also charged 31-year-old Jean Paul Forde with assault by auto. Investigators say Forde was under the influence of alcohol and speeding when he lost control, triggering the collision with 39-year-old Colleen Guierro. She died instantly but her young daughter survived. Forde is in the Ocean County Jail, bail set at $100,000
PINE BEACH - Two people are injured in a four-car chain collision on Route 9 in Pine Beach. The crash happened a little before 11AM on the northbound side of the two-lane highway. Police have not yet released identities of the two victims who were taken to Community Medical Center in Toms River. Berkeley Township police diverted traffic while Pine Beach officers tended the crash.
BARNEGAT - A house in Barnegat goes up in smoke before it's even finished. Police say the home under construction on Norwalk Avenue was fully engulfed in flames when first-responders arrived just before 2AM. Both township fire departments combined their efforts to contain and douse the blaze. Investigators are sifting through charred wreckage to learn the cause and the source.
TOMS RIVER - Shore man sustains a head injury after falling from the back of a pickup in Toms River, and his coworker is charged with letting him ride there. Police say 23-year-old Alejandro Cambonero tumbled out of the truck around 7:30PM last night in the Fairways apartment complex. He was treated at Community Medical Center. 59-year-old Theodore Zeliznak of Middletown got a summons.
TOMS RIVER - A pump jockey at a Toms River gas station is nursing bruises after trying to stop a driver from leaving without paying for gas. Police say the 21-year-old attendant at the One-Stop on Hooper Avenue poured $37 worth into the 2003 Dodge Dakota about seven last night, and was dragged about 50 feet when he tried to collect. The suspect is described as a white male about 40 years old, with a mustache and glasses. The SUV has a silver toolbox.
TRENTON - Monmouth County Congressman Frank Pallone is urging the State Department of Environmental Protection to delay its order to NY/NJ Baykeeper to remove its shellfish beds by this Friday. Pallone wrote a letter to Commissioner Bob Martin asking him to work with Baykeeper to find a mutually beneficial solution for the oyster restoration projects located in the Navesink River and the Raritan Bay.
ASBURY PARK - Guns can be turned in for cash in Monmouth County starting today. The Prosecutors Office initiative is meant to take weapons off the streets. The program offers anywhere from $25 to $100 for weapons. B-B guns and ammunition can also be turned in. Weapons can be brought to the Asbury Park police headquarters through Sunday.
Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst is in line to get $36-million dollars to support three projects. Congressman John Adler says the funding is part of the 2011 fiscal year National Defense Authorization Act approved by the full House last night. The money will fund a machine gun range, a new command facility and military housing. The measure also includes $20 million dollars slipped in as an amendement by Congressman Rush Holt to promote suicide prevention programs for veterans. The bill now needs to win approval in the Senate.
