Fort Monmouth Workforce Topic Of Forum

The New Jersey Technology Council held a forum in Eatontown Tuesday to discuss how the closure of Fort Monmouth will affect the local business community.

"If we can attract and keep companies here today, get these companies to employ people that are no longer going to be working at the base, then maybe in several years, they will be located at the base, but we have real estate now outside the base, lets utilize that to keep the companies here and the jobs here," says Caren Franzini, CEO, New Jersey Economic Development Authority.

Fort Monmouth is scheduled to close in September 2011 and most of its operations will move to Aberdeen, Maryland. Some Fort employees are moving down there and some are retiring but others are staying in New Jersey and looking for new jobs.

Governor Chris Christie is expected to sign legislation soon that will create a panel that will implement the Fort Monmouth reuse plan that addresses another problem - what to do with the land.
