Atlantic Sea Island Group Pulls Plug on LNG Island

Great news for the ocean. That's how one of New Jersey's coastal advocates feels about Atlantic Sea Island Group's (A-S-I-G'S) Decision to withdraw its application to build an island for Liquified Natural Gas off the New York/New Jersey coastline.

Clean Ocean Action Executive Director Cindy Zipf explains what she believes led to A-S-I-G's change of heart. "It was their concern because public opinion was so in opposition to what they wanted to do as well as the economy that really precipitated their wise decision to pull the plug on the project."

In a letter to the Commandant, of the Deepwater Ports Standards Division, A-S-I-G's Attorney's sited: "This announcement when weighed with existing market conditions: The current "climate" regarding offshore development in the aftermath of the recent gulf incident; and the prevailing uncertainty with respect to both the U.S. and global economy ...."

Meanwhile, applications for two more L-N-G terminals are still pending. Zipf says, they're hoping the two company's are watching the project and are going to seriously think about the same issues that led to A-S-I-G's decision.

Zipf says they're working with New Jersey's washington representatives to designate the NY/NJ bite a Clean Ocean Zone.

However, the Maritime administration of the U.S. Department of Transportation told A-S-I-G that they will retain all materials submitted by them should they decided to re-submit its application.
