Remembering Marine Major James Weis (1973 - 2010)
A Marine Major originally from Toms River who died last week in Afghanistan is being remembered as a hero.
37 year old Major James Weis first joined the Marines in 1994. He had been awarded several medals and served in Iraq twice and Afghanistan. He also taught at the Marine Corps Base in Quantico, Virginia. He had been assigned to the Marine Aircraft Group 39 based out of Camp Pendleton, California.
While responding to a call for air support, his cobra helicopter was hit by four surface air-to-air missiles fired from the ground by the Taliban.
His mother Anne Weis now resides in Florida with her husband, who's also a retired Military man.
Anne was obviously shcoked and saddened when she first got the news of her son's death but that feeling quickly changed to pride. She says "I am so proud of him. He died fighting for what he believed in - what he loved to do."
Anne has another son who serves in the military and prays for him every day.
Weis grew up in Toms River and graduated from Rutgers University. He leaves behind a wife and two sons ages 5 and 7. Final arrangements are pending.
