Garden State Lawmaker Wants To Crack Down On Auto Insurance Fraud
Jersey lawmakers could soon approve a plan to crack down on one type of insurance fraud that's becoming more widespread across the Garden state.
Legislation sponsored by Assemblyman Wayne DeAngelo would make it a 4th degree crime to fraudulently obtain auto insurance out-of-state - if the driver's principal residence is in Jersey.
DeAngelo says the measure is necessary because "the Office of Insurance Fraud - the prosecutor - is (currently) unable to prosecute the so-called reverse rate evasion for these cases…by enacting this legislation we're going to give the Office of Insurance Fraud prosecutor the tools necessary to remedy the situation."
He adds " insurance fraud at any level is costing New Jerseyans the spike in the increase in their premiums- we want o ensure that everybody's living up to the letter of the law…we want to make sure that everybody plays by the rules, so that we can keep costs down for New Jerseyans."
The measure has been approved by the full Lower House, and now heads to the State Senate for consideration.
